The completion of the Saint Lawrence Seaway turned Duluth one of the most important inland harbors in the country.

Service based industries in the state also enhance the economy with businesses in the areas of health care, computer programming, data processing, legal services, automobile repair, finance, insurance, real estate wholesale automobiles, farm products, groceries, retail discount stores, food stores and restaurants.
