Connecticut obtains most of its prosperity
from industrial endeavors like the production of textiles, silverware
and sewing machines. Both clocks and watches make up an important
part of Connecticut's history of manufacturing. The state’s
primary industries today produce jet engines and parts, electronics
and electrical machinery, computer equipment, and helicopters. The
military is the reason for a great deal of this New England state’s
manufacturing. The history of the American Revolution created a
number of industries including the production of firearms and ammunition.
The city of Groton is still a hub for submarine construction. Military
spending has a significant effect on the economy of this state.Agricultural products make up just a small segment of state income. The main products from the land here include dairy products, eggs, vegetables, tobacco, mushrooms, and apples. The high quality of the broadleaf tobacco grown here has supplied the cigar making industry with wrappers since the 1830s. The fishing industry is alive and well here providing several varieties of fish, oysters, lobsters, and other shellfish that are caught in Long Island Sound. Only a small sector of the economy here the fishing industry is hindered by pollution of the fishing grounds. The mining industry extracts stone, sand, and gravel to add a trivial amount of revenue to the state economy. The insurance industry is an important cog in the Connecticut economic machine. The city of Hartford and the surrounding area one of the insurance industry's world centers. Connecticut is the home to the offices of many insurance companies, financial, real estate, and service industries that add to the power of this state’s economy. The gambling industry represented by the Foxwoods casino and resort on the Mashantucket Pequot reservation has turned into one of the biggest employers in Connecticut. The Mohegan Sun casino is another large casino attracting many tourists to Southeast Connecticut. |
