tomatoes, strawberries, and almonds. California’s main cash crops
are grapes, cotton, flowers, and oranges. The dairy industry and
its products provide the principal portion of farm revenue. This
innovative state also generates the biggest share of United States
domestic wine production. This multi faceted state has very rich
soil and a extended growing season that when linked with contemporary
farming techniques makes it a prolific agricultural area indeed.
Water through irrigation is a very important part of the agricultural
scheme, particularly in the San Joaquin Valley and Imperial Valley.
The harvesting and preparation for market of most California agricultural
produce is carried on by seasonal migrant labor, for the most part
Mexicans. The fishing industry is a significant additional part
of this state’s economy. The processing of California crops is another important factor in the state’s industrial climate as it many local assets such as petroleum, natural gas, lumber, cement, and sand and gravel. After the Second World War the manufacture of electronic equipment, computers, machinery, transportation equipment, and metal products, has increased tremendously. The military is an important part of the state’s economy particularly in Southern California. The power of this sector of the economy had waned since the end of the cold war. A number of high-tech companies as well as small low-tech businesses offer a low wage segment of the Southern California economy. This region is considered to be the biggest manufacturing area in the United States. The Silicon Valley, which lies between Palo Alto and San Jose, earned its name due to the fact that it is the United States’ principal manufacturer of semiconductors and a center of software development. The availability of water is one of the state’s most crucial problems. Los Angeles requires a massive amount of water that is illogically turning one productive fertile areas of the state to become arid wastelands. California’s Imperial Valley is itself a massive irrigation project that consumes huge amounts of water diverted from the Colorado River. The Central Valley area of the state has a water problem exacerbated by is poor distribution. The Federal governments failure to follow through with a number of water projects is increasing the pressure for the state to use more and more of this dwindling resource in a less than planned way. The US federal government to stopped California from using surplus water from the Colorado River in 2003. |
