Yerba Buena Island has some nicely forested natural hills.

There was a shoal here that was only 26 feet beneath the bay’s surface. It was a very dangerous navigation hazard. Two hundred and eighty-seven thousand tons of quarried rock was dumped. A significant section of the ocean floor here was excavated and mixed with the quarried rock to build a wall 13 feet above the tide line. These materials were washed to remove the salt and fifty thousand cubic yards of loam were added to the mix. This pile of earthen materials created a four hundred acre island. Some of the buildings constructed here included administrative buildings one of these buildings cost nearly one million dollars. There were also two airplane hangers constructed.
