Homes in the Haight Ashbury district survived the big earthquake of 1906. This has left this neighborhood of San Francisco with a wealth of historical buildings that reflect the significance of the Victorian influence. The birth of the Hippies and the revolution of the 60s had a symbolic center here in the Haight. During this time the Victorian survivors of the big quake became urban communes attracting writers,
musicians, dancers and artists from many disciplines.

Most of the evidence of flower power has been erased and the process of gentrification has turned these same Victorian survivors into expensive trendy shops, offices or multiplex apartments. The intersection of these two streets is presently attractive to drug users and the associated crime. There is an effort to prohibit the establishment of new bars to change the nature of the neighborhood.
