A system was put in place in 1977 called the Alaska Permanent Fund, which sets aside twenty five percent of oil royalties to supply Alaskans with revenue after the oil reserves are depleted. The government including federal, state, and local offices is a key source of employment in this northern outpost. Alaska's tactical position in relation to Russia has created substantial military interest since World War II. The US military has developed highways, airfields, and permanent military bases adding to the state’s economy. The tourism business in Alaska has grown significantly as transportation options to the state have expanded. Tourism is the second largest industry in the state next to oil production. The Inside Passage, for cruise ships, Denali National Park, and the world famous 1000-mile long sled-dog race called the Iditarod are chief tourist attractions.
